Shuttle Discovery
 

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone was lucky enough to capture the space shuttle on it's launch and not only capture it but on HDV whether you got JVC, Sony?

I would love to see a short if not the whole clip of the liftoff.

A previous launch was captured on a JVC HDV by NASA themselves, It was encoded in H.264 and is availible at the Quicktime HD Gallery.

I didn't get to shoot video of today's launch, but did have a ringside seat from Firing Room 3 at the KSC Launch Control Center. Fortunately for all us shutterbugs, this is the most imaged shuttle launch in history so we will have plenty of great public domain from NASA.

But, I'm sorry I must say...it isn't correct that the Shuttle video montage on the Quicktime HD site was done in HDV. The gallery features Shuttle Discovery, which last flew as STS-105 in August of 2001. Not too many folks were shooting HDV in 2001 and prior.

BTW, NASA has been shooting HiDef for several years. I bump into one of the main KSC videographers -- a very nice guy by the name of Glenn -- and chat with him just about every time I'm there; he wears a DVCProHD camera on his shoulder. On orbit, most video is done with DV camcorders and on occasion they do fly IMAX cameras, which may have been what some of the orbital HD shots were.
