Arriflex, long known and renowned for it's grip on the film production World
has released what can only be described as the next generation and Ultimate
DV solution for extremely serious enthusiasts of the format.

Different productions have different needs, and the D-20 is a flexible tool
that can be used in two different output modes: Video or Film Mode.

In Video Mode, the data coming from the D-20 sensor is processed live in the
camera. Color reconstruction is performed simultaneously as the 2880 x 1620
pixel grid is converted to 1920 x 1080 resolution. A sophisticated on-board
color management system has been implemented to optimize the camera's
performance for different lighting situations including blue and green screen
work. In Video Mode, the D-20 can supply a variety of standard HD video
signals for different recording formats, including HDCAM SR, thus allowing the
D-20 to integrate seamlessly into existing HD infrastructures.

The D20's modular format allows for future growth allowing investors to
upgrade their sensors as new technology becomes available.

The internal workflow or system hardware config of the D20 is tight and
well integrated into the attractive and well balanced case design.

What incredibly high price tag does it come with?

Good question.

Because it's still in the development stages they have not
set a price tag for it yet.

There is another issue still outstanding with the camera,
how to store the incredibly large data loads coming from
the camera itself.

The camera is apparently capable of delivering 10GB / Sec
of data through the ports.

For direct storage the only solution I can think of is Fibre Channel
transfer through 3 x 4GB Fibre Channel ports which would have to be
built into a custom docking unit for the camera.

To effectively store this data a company would have to use at least
a 10 Terrabyte storage array which is and of itself extremely expensive.

Because this unit is meant as an option for professional production
I'm assuming the price tag will be in the neighborhood of around 500K
or possibly more.

But once you have one WOW the results will be spectacular I'm sure.

I think Arri intends to market the unit initially to large studios and rental
houses although I'm sure if one has the financial resources one can
purchase the camera as well.

So for now I'll stick with my XL Canon MiniDV and wait for the new
Canon XL HD unit to hit the market because 10K is much more realistic
for me than 500K and the results on the new HD from Canon will most
certainly be spectacular.
