Sony announces a High Def DVD-R camcorder @ CES.

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,124231,00.asp

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, I bet the compression is H.264/MPEG-4 AVC.

I don't think it's high def, just regular MPEG2 DVD type. If it is actually high def, then it is Blu-Ray.

It's standard-def. PC World just labeled it wrong.

You can see all the Sony new CES product announcements in this all-in-one press release:
http://news.sel.sony.com/filestorage...sion_id=185254

and the full CES press kit is available at:

Besides if it was Hi-Def it would be HDR not DCR in the model number.

Shame though. I was hoping for lots of new Hi-Def Camcorders at the CES (to get HD in the mainstream asap). Sadly there was only one - the Sanyo...

I wasn't! Certainly not from Sony anyway. I'm picking up my Z1 tomorrow and couldn't bear the thought of finding out about an upgrade the day before I go get the soon-to-be-superseded model...
