Making Stills from HDV

I captured HDV footage from my Z1. The aspect ratio is set at Canopus HD 50i/HQ60i* and it fills the preview window. I made a still to use for a 16x9 SD DVD menu page. The bmp is 1440x1080. When I place the still on the timeline it looks 16x9, but when I open the still in Photoshop it looks 4X3.

Where are my settings incorrect?

For now we want to make 16x9 SD DVDs. Any suggestions on where to find 16x9 menus for Encore?

In Photoshop, resize to 1920 x 1080, and it should come out fine. I have to do the same thing.

Mark, this is the native size... Just increase like suggested :)

EDIUS can save deinterlaced PSD screen grabs with the correct Aspect ratio (16.9) in one simple click. Just set up your settings correctly in EDIUS

Here is a brochure we made with a screen grab from EDIUS.
We got 5000 copies made and even printed out a few at A3 size.
The Whale Shark mouth pic is the screen grab.

Hi Paul,

That's is good to know. The brochure looks great. What camera are you shooting with and what settings are you using in Edius?

Mark
Go settings/ plugin settings/still image
Then click on Odd or Even field and Fullscreen
Click the adjust aspect settings too.
And file type is Photoshop Files (PSD) in the drop down box.

Click OKAY and then when you click the grab image button on the timeline, you have a perfect PSD image.

We have the Sony HDV FX1 and HDV A1 cameras with Amphbico Phenom and EVO underwater housings.

Thanx for the resize tip

It was driving me crazy. Your solution to resize to 1920 x 1080 made sense, and I wound up thinking, "Why didn't I think of that?" Thank you very much.

Mark, once you have your image in Photoshop, you can try the de-interlace filter for better results (in the Video filters menu item). That is, if Edius exports the still as both fields.

I know when I export from Avid, I get a better looking still if I export using both fields, then de-interlace in Photoshop.

It doesn't look as good if I export using one field. You lose half your resolution.
