Downconvert using Matrox

Hello Matrox uses,

Can anyone confirm the best way to down convert HDV to SD for DVD using the Matrox RT.X 2?

I have recently been importing the Matrox HDV .avi file into Virtual dud to resize it to 720 X 576 (Pal 16:9) and then encode to mpeg 2 using TMPGEnc. However I still get the jaggies! The colour and picture looks great however.

Anyone have a better solution?

Regards Scott.

I use PremPro2+Access HD, not the tools you use have, but I have a suggestion. When I used the aforementioned to output standard [either NTSC 30i or PAL 25i], my 1080i Sony footage had very exact, three line deep, jaggies if there was ANY panning. I got wonderful results by outputting standard PROGRESSIVE footage. If you think about it, a single 1080i HDV field is 540 high and 1440 across, more than enough to make even a PAL 576x720 frame. In my case, the Cineform Access makes the .avi export to standard. I then use DVDit Pro HD to make both standard DVDs and Blu-Ray HD discs.

Thanks for the reply Don. I will look into exporting standard progressive.

After a lot of testing, the best way I have found based on the Adobe products (RT.X2) is to export a native file and do the downsample in After Effects. Much better results, and you account for interlacing, and even add pulldown to 24p footage for DVD.

So it look’s like investing in after effects is the best option? Not cheap when you consider having already paid for the Matrox hardware…

Thanks for your reply Mike
