Media Bins: Vegas -vs- Avid, Adobe, Apple

I'm beginning the initial planning stages of some longer form projects and haven't used bins up to this time. I have been researching how apps like Avid use bins to help keep media files organized so that they are easy to find as needed - How does this work within Vegas? Are Vegas Bins comparable to the triple AAA apps if I'm not sharing my projects with other users???

Before I invest my time and energy into these documentary projects - I'm trying to determine if I'm going to get bitten again with lost time if in the middle of a project Vegas decides to crap out on me or is unable to cope with lots of HDV clips - otherwise, my search leads me towards Avid or Adobe. I would like to feel somewhat secure in knowing that how Bins work in Vegas Pro is comparable to my understanding of bins for Avid, which is the strongest alternative for me at the present time - and know that they aren't going to get wonky on me while working with them.
