Interesting, but glossy.

A quote from that website: "D-Theater also boasts superior audio quality, with its Dolby Digital 5.1 audio streams compressed at 576 kps, which is less compression that DVD (which is compressed at 384-448 kps)."

So ... is it possible to add 5.1 audio to HDV footage within an NLE and then export that back to either i) an HD1 camera, or ii) a DVHS deck?

I dont recall seeing HDV templates that included 5.1 audio in Premiere Pro, but I didnt do a particularly thorough search ....

I don't know about Premiere (attention, David Newman!), but I am pretty sure in Final Cut Pro, you can do 5.1 stereo surround sound. Then, do an export to DVHS.

Graham:

I'm pretty sure you can use Adobe Audition with Premiere to get your DD 5.1 stereo surround. I haven't done it myself, so I do not know much about the audio compression rates.

Jst to clarify ... Premiere does indeed have a Surcode plugin that provides 2.0 and 5.1 AC3 encoding of audio.

But ...what I'm wondering is whether an HDV transport stream containing that kind of audio will export back via wirewire to a HDV camcorder or deck. I've never seen 5.1 audio mentioned in the manuals in this context.

Graham:

My understanding was that the AC3 encoded file would be for DVD burning and use. Not sure whether a DV tapes are constructed to handle 5.1 on its audio strip.

Kyle,

As you'll see from the quote in my first post in this thread, the commercial DVHS tapes DO support 5.1 dolby digital.

So it's tempting to think that we will be able create such tapes ourselves.

But so far I havent been able to find any documentation on the transfer process between the computer and the camera or deck.

Heath McKnight August 12th, 2004 07:50 AM

Graham,

In the HDV Editing thread, why don't you start a new post asking how to do 5.1 stereo on the NLE, then keep that when going to DVHS.
