HD Editing on a Laptop?

Hello -

I'm curious to know if there is a laptop solution viable enough for:

- Editing HD material; (specifically DVCPRO-HD material off the Panasonic HVX200)
- Mixing / composing 5.1 audio
- DVD Authoring

I would like it to be strong enough to be able to do cuts and fades in realtime hopefully.

Preference would be a Win based machine but would happily get a Mac. As for the Win side, do the Centrino's have the horsepower to do the above?

Any advice / suggestions would be most appreciated.

I'm usuing a lap top. Its do-able. Just make sure the specs are right, alteast 2 gig of RAM and of course a huge external hard drive. Oh don't get the Centrino. P4 2.8 higher with HT.

I was curious about editing on a Apple Laptop. Thinking about picking up the 1.67GHz 17inch... might wait until apple makes the intel switch. Does anyone here know when that happens?

But only Apple knows for sure when they can come to market with Intel Inside.

Just user your editor's Proxy mode.

I've edited HD from a CineAlta (1920x1080 24p 4:2:2) comfortably in realtime with a 3Ghz P4 laptop, 512 Meg Ram.

The trick is to use an editor that can support the creation of low-res proxy clips from the source files. The PREVIEW from the timeline is based on the lowres proxy. Then the render automatically pulls from the full res source, so you loose no quality.

Works great for cuts and fades editing.
Not as useful if you're doing something that's totally based on the full res .... like greenscreen compositing.

Hope this helps.

yeah working "online/offline" type of workflow

Just a little on the metion of the intel based apple computers.

Its being speculated all over that the consumer stuff like ibooks and mac mini's are going to be the first to move over to intel because these are not used in demanding applications where the software needs hugh optimization. Its going to take a while for FCP to be ported to an intel based mac along with the other pro apps. They will probably work out of box when the new intel based stuff gets here but I'm betting the performance will initially lag in the pro apples on the new intel stuff vs. the old G5 stuff on consumer systems when they arrive. With the quad G5 I'd say they are going to have another speed bump and then release the G5 intel based replacement.

Total speculation that I'm regurjitating here but it makes sense. Easy to port a web browser but harder to port something that uses hugh bus bandwidth and stuff like high end editing apps where that data is fly all over the place and needs some very good programming.
