Got Yonah today

I ordered a laptop with the new Intel T2500 dual core (2GHz, 2MB L2 cache) the morning they appeared on Dell and HP’s website. It took a month more to arrive because the Intel-Apples seem to have scooped the first shipment of Yonah processors.

It is what I expected. Compared to my 2 yr old 3.2 GHz P4 desktop (w/hyper-threading) the T2500 laptop is theoretically 2.2 times faster. It feels like a dual Xeon (3.4GHz) I used to work on. Theoretically, because compiling video was only 1.1 times faster, but the Yonah processor utilization is slightly less than half that of the old P4.

Another subjective tidbit: Downloading 23 minutes of HDV from my FX1 into Premiere 1.5.1 (without Cineform) left about 5 minutes of rendering to be completed. Again only 50% processor utilization. Is there a way to get Premier to use the whole processor? I know separate disks would help, but the hard disk light was not on continuously.

Btw, HP & Dell have so far only announced home models (mine is the HP Pavilion dv1000T, 5-6lbs.) with mobo graphics. The better business units with dedicated graphics RAM (and I am guessing newer mobos) are yet to be announced. I’m sure a fixed workstation would be best but this will make my nomadic life much much better.

I also got two of the extended all-day batteries. My hope is to work on projects while backpacking (I volunteer to make films for science/environmental groups).
