My HDV workflow problem.
 

Hello,
I have just made the jump from DV to HDV.

I like to use effects (deinterlace, colour correction and some keyframe stuff). so I have been testing this workflow:

- I capture in PP2 full size HDV
- Then I export the HDV clip to Uncompressed AVI
- I take this AVI into After Effects and do various effects

Now here is where I am stuck, How do I get from Uncompressed AVI in After Effects back to HDV (MPEG2)? Editing Uncompressed AVI back into PP2 is very slow for me, compared to editing native HDV in PP2.

Does anyone know the best way (settings)? I would like to stay in 1080i. Oh, and Cineform Aspect HD is out of the question, there is no way I can afford that :(

Uncompressed .avi ? How big are those files ? One minute= ?

Question: Knowing that you lose something with repeated renders of an HDV clip, have you had any success with keeping everything HDV. I have similar set up, but I don't do anything in AE. What do you see as problem with stay in the "native" edit.

One minute of uncompressed HDV sized AVI is 4.35 GB.

The reason I go uncompressed for After Effects is to do keyframe effects and uncompressed colour correction.

I'm not sure how to take that footage out of After Effects. Mpeg2 maybe? Exporting it back out in Uncompressed would be nice but its hell to edit in PP2 (slow).

I need someone with experience to say what settings would be good to render to mpeg2 HDV for editing in Premiere Pro 2.

Since even Adobe admits that AE7 does not handle HDV well, I would use Aspect HD so that you could use Cineform AVI in both applications.

HDV is a con. You spend all this money on cameras and editing programs, but then your told that they will only work properly if you spend another $500 on a codec! I don't know how the owners of Cineform sleep at night (on a big pile of cash most likeley).

Wait just a moment! Don't blame Cineform. They saw a need and filled it. Adobe gave it away then changed their mind and in the next version did not give it away.

Adobe is at fault, not Cineform.

When I needed them, Cineform stepped up to the plate and made my HDV editing a LOT easier and a whole lot faster. When new cameras come out, Cineform supports them within days or weeks. Try waiting for Adobe to catch up and see how long it takes.

Cineform is a small company with big ideas. Adobe is a big company that has lost much of the entrepreneurial spirit.

Thank Cineform, don't curse them.

Feel free to use Premiere Pro without Aspect HD. Just be prepared to suffer miserably.

Well, its really Cineforms prices that I was bashing. Can they really justify that much for just a codec?

No. Not just for a codec. But Aspect HD is more than that. You might look on their site and notice that Connect HD is cheaper than Aspect HD. Why? Because Aspect HD does more. It adds acceleration that is not available with "just a codec".

I don't work for Cineform, but I would not want to edit without it. You might notice that my web site has an HDV page and that I feature Cineform. That is just because I was so happy to finally find Aspect HD when I needed it. I am one of their biggest fans.

It is worth the money. Back when we all paid over $3000 for a HDV camera from Sony, an additional $500 was not too stiff a fee. Now that people are buying cheaper cameras, they need to be warned about needing Cineform Aspect HD. I try as best I can to warn people. But I can not reach everyone regardless of the 30,000 visits I get to my web site each month.

If I bought the application, I am sure that they can justify it :-). But, seriously Cineform Aspect HD is a great addition. I just bought Aspect HD and it has really changed how I edit high-def (or will edit high-def).
