Portable harddrive FW800. Who?
Looking for a portable harddrive Firewire 800 for HDV editing.
Are there any tests about this drives? Looked at: Maxtor OneTouch III Harddisk 320GB External 7200RPM Retail FireWire 800 Western Digital 250GB My Book Pro Edit. Pro Edition, USB 2,0/Firewire 800 Or: Maxtor OneTouch III 500GB USB2.0/FW800 Western Digital 500GB My Book Pro Edit. Pro Edition, USB 2,0/Firewire 800 Anyone tried this? |
Just bought two days ago a WD 500 Essential (USB only) for editing both HD and SD - it'll be a few days before I have the time to test it.

I use a Lacie 500GB w/ FW800... and I've edited HDV from it. I haven't streamed more than two HDV clips at a time though.

There have been many posts pro and con on USB and Firewire drives. A much higher performance alternative is something called eSATA. It is a shielded plug/socket variation that allows full speed SATA connections at 1.5gig or 3.0 gigabit speeds. If you have a free SATA port on the motherboard its really inexpensive. There are also PCI (for desktop) and ExpressBus cards (for the newest notebooks). You then use standard SATA drives in an external enclosure. Google it!

I've been researching external drives lately, but have not yet taken the plunge.
A reviewer at tomshardware.com seems to like the Western Digital My Book Pro: http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/12/...yle/index.html The review also has charts comparing throughput, etc. of this drive and other drives. You can also read reviews of this drive, as well as other external drives, at www.newegg.com . Hope this helps. Let us know what you get and how you like it. :) Jim |
Thanks.
Maybee eSATA is better do use then Firewire 800. Anyone knows what best for HDV editing on a notebook. I want noise as litle as posible. So what harddrive shall i use? Not so many eSATA or SATAII portable harddrive. But I have to put it into a eSATA box. |
