JVC GZ-HD7 .tod files

Hello,

I have one question for HD7 users, anybody noticed original recorded file in HD7 mean .tod files actually are progressive scan instead of interlaced? If we play original .tod files in Window Media 11 than they are so smooth and very much clear, and if play same converted files supplied CyberLink's PowerDirector software than they looks interlaced! Clearly we can see horizontal lines!

I do not understand if CCDs are progressive then why JVC converted them into interlaced as final MPEG2 output?

This is a function of the conversion method. Steve would know exactly how to handle this but from what I saw there is no need for conversion as such. The software generates a .mpg all on its own which you can import into almost anything.

Yes, but did you notice? .tod files looks very smooth in WMP 11 but converted .mpg files shows horizontal lines (interlaced). So question is why .mpg output shows visible horizontal lines! Is original .tod files are actually progressive? So it is better to use original .tod files?

And because of this I always make .tod files after editing, I am assuming all guys who owns HD7 knows that we can make .tod files (GZ HD series). Supplied PowerDirector can make original .tod files.

WMP is the problem. Look at viewing the files with other codecs and other players. Then again I dont know your setup.

Did you buy Steve's book ?

I do not think WMP has problem, since it is playing absolutely fine HD7's original .tod files! So my question is that why converted files shows horizontal lines (Interlaced)?

And originally, my question was that if HD7 captures videos in progressive mode than why JVC converted them into interlaced?

Haven't worked on a Windows machine for years, but is it possible that WMP is de-interlacing the files while playing?

Exactly my thought.

I am afraid but I have installed PowerDVD Ultra, VLC player in my Laptop, both shows horizontal lines! Do I need some software to be installed?

And I am repeating again & again my main question is why original files works smoothly in WMP and doesn’t show interlaced lines? So it means .tod files actually are progressive? Since HD7 has three progressive CCDs! It record in progressive, and convert them into interlaced, but why? If it is true then why JVC converted them in interlaced?

I guess the idea behind WMP's de-interlacing is that many users would b*tch at Microsoft about lines in their files.
As far as I understand is that the HD7's output IS interlaced.

Normally, your editing software should provide you with de-interlacing during rendering if your footage is aimed to be watched on a computer screen.

Except for Avid Media Composer all NLE show only 1 field of video on your computer screen.

Interesting ... how is de-interlacing working then? I always thought it combined the two fields.
Or did I get something completely wrong? ... It is a long time ago since I read the last book about video.

I still have not received any answer to my question! Huh!

I have the feeling that only JVC would be able to answer that question.

There are a dozen ways to deinterlace so a proper answer would be a very long one.

In an NLE where a "monitor" is about a quarter the size of the screen, dropping one field makes the most sense. Players, like VLC and the QT Player, give you a choice. VLC gives you many choices. However, none of the choices are documented so good luck. :)

Bottom-line, you should never see interlace on ANY display or on ANY TV. The exception is FLASH in your browser which seems to have no settings. Other players should allow you to find a setting that looks good.

I still remember last year when this camera was introduced, one early user of HD7 has proved that HD7 is actually prograssive recorder! I will try to find out that post and will post here.

But anybody noticed same what I ? Means original .tod files are so smooth whereas converted MPEG files shows interlaced lines!
