JVC HD Cam and "Film Hopefuls"
 

I know, I know, the JVC HD Cam isn’t for filmmakers, it’s only for yuppies with expensive HDTV sets. I know, but, in my last grab to see this cam as a useful tool for a “DV-to-Film hopeful” such as myself, I called Digital Film Group up (http://www.digitalfilmgroup.net/) and asked them if this camera would be good for a 35mm blow up. Their answer: While it can be done, converting 30p to 24p will create major motion problems on the big screen (unlike 24p, 50i, and 60i.) Oh well, I tried. I really like this camera’s resolution, but if it is going to lock me out of a 35mm print, I wont be buying it. 30p maybe the future of digital cinema, but unfortunately, I just don't have a time machine right now.

There is no reason to believe that Digital Cinema will be 30fps. In fact, there are a world of reasons why it will remain 24fps.

Assuming one can shoot at 30fps and have universal distribution seems stupid to me -- even 5-10 years from now. Think of all the PAL countries who will want 25fps! Think of the billion 35mm film projectors world-wide. If you are going to film, shoot 24fps.

However, private distribution via 720p60 is very real. While the HD1 is for those with HDTVs -- the HD10 is for a different market.

This might have been asked before, but...does 720p HDTV in Europe run at 25 fps, or 30 fps?

I'm not old enuff to remember, but, I read that when sound was first introduced to silent films, some pundits claimed it would never catch on...hehehehehe.

Europe doesn't have HD. You get PAL via analog or digital.

This is why the Europe version of the JVC will not have HD at 25p. No HDTVs to show it on.

HOWEVER, plasmas and projectors can present 720p60 so those who own them in PAL countries can still use private cinema at 60fps.

ALSO, there is HD production in the PAL world using 1080p24 or 720p24. This is either converted to film or PAL (or NTSC) plus any USA HD standard.

Here's the conclusion I came to, as an indie filmmaker: I want to buy this camera (or another mini-HD) because DV/SD is a thing of the past. I will use this camera mostly in HD mode because I can always down-convert (if I'm doing the usual free-lance stuff, like tiny local commercials and what not--for other things, like news and such, I will use DV).

For my films, I don't know how many more $1000 - $2000-budgeted movies I'll make. The HD quality will help tremendously, and that makes me want to keep at it. But for my next film, "9:04 AM," I plan on renting my friend's CineAlta (he and some others own a fairly large HD/SD/DV company in NYC) to shoot it. I want to have a better plan, bigger budget, a star or two (willing to work cheap), a final 35 MM print...Yes, I enjoy the tiny films, but I want to move up in the world.

But I still have some tiny, non-35 MM (unless someone tells us to later on, when the film is done) blow-up projects I'd like to do. And the mini-HD is perfect for it. I'm weary of my XL-1's image...
