I just shot a short film with the new JVC GRHD1U 'MiniHD' camcorder. Here are my thoughts on the camera:

WHAT I LIKED

1) Pretty amazing for 3500 bucks. Viewing the 720p material in its full HD glory is impressive. There is some color banding and artifacting, but its not terrible, certainly not as noticeable as DV macroblocking.

2) Nice color response, very vivid and vibrant. My whole shoot was outdoors in full sunlight, and the camera did well.

3) A lot more latitude than DV. We shot side by side with a DVX100, and the JVC had a much wider luminance range than the Panasonic.

WHAT I DISLIKED

1) No way to turn down sharpening (detail). This really, really sucked. Some of the images look like I've run an unsharp mask filter on them. And, as far as I can tell, there was no way to dial this down.

2) Manual and controls are all in Japanese, which was expected, this was a Japanese model. It will be great when they make and release the English language version.

3) Its still a consumer camera, and would mysteriously jump into full auto mode and start changing my iris and shutter settings.

Some of those stills are really nice, although I'm still not quite sure what I should be ooohing and aaaahing about. There were a couple of shots that still showed over-exposure when shadows were well defined, but the 'ladder' shot was beautiful for both colour and contrast.

These images are also saved out at 640x 360 instead of the full rez of 1280x720. That alone can hurt the image. Also how it was saved also can not help. The path the images were sent through the system to the jpeg stage as well. I color corrected some of these low rez clips and they come to life when doing so. I believe in posting images to the desired look instead of getting it right in camera. I was trained in the film side, and it was in the lab were you made the images come to life not in the camera. So in todays digital posting this is were it all comes together. Now, for some it's important to get the best out of the camera and I can fully understand why many would need that. There are jobs where the turn around time is to short to do a lot of posting. I don't have that probelm, but I know many that do work tight dead lines. These are interesting times.

Well that certainly seems to blow apart all that stuff written recently about this camera having poor color reproduction, those colors look very rich and lifelike to me. Were they color corrected prior to posting?

Did some basic color adjustments to pics
 

When I saw these low res versions of the jvc pics I did some very basic color adjustments to some of them. I uploaded them to my site.

I am fairly certain the HD10 has much less edge emphasis.

And, I have found I liked the color better when I color corrected the saturation by +15 clicks.

Whoa, this is a lot different than what we've seen before. Very nice looking pictures. ESPECIALLY the color corrected ones - they look outstanding. I can't wait to see some actual footage done up by people who know what they're doing. Maybe we've underestimated this thing.

What software did you use to color correct those stills? What
did you change primarely (add warmth so it seems).

I to like what you've done to color correct those images (though its more of a Color Enhancment really isnt it? :D) and i'd really like to learn how you did that without having to spend months reasearching it. And if possible in apps we can get out mitts on (Eg photoshop/paint shop/Vegas). Cheers

These tests are material from a film by Eric Escobar. These are very crude tests. They are by no means official and are just done to see very crude simple surface feed back on the JVC HD camera vs. a regular mini DV SD camera like the DVX100.
