HDTV in Australia
 

Just found this about HDTV down-under:

"The minimum HD picture resolution is be 576 lines x 720 pixels @ 50Hz progressive (576p)."

This, of course, is the same rez as our 480p which is at 60p.

Now if JVC were to release the HD10 for Australia, it would be PAL 50i and its SD be 576p50.

Wouldn't one expect the HD to be 720p25? This would go to 24fps easily!

PS, I can't believe 576 is being called HD. But they do also show 1080i50 -- so they do have HD as we know it.

the dvx100 already does 720x576p @25fps, and is available right now.

I'd be interested as to where you seen these specs for us slower-then-a-snail technology taking up Australians? :)

But secondly... yes unfortunatly the stupid governing bodies somehow thought it'd be smart to say 576p50 is HD. Us citizens dont seem to like it, at least i far from like it. AFAIC 720p and 1080i/p are the ONLY High Defintion Formats.

We do, of course, have HD as you guys see it (but unforunatly the silly region thing is still in place - 50Hz Vs 60 Hz). I seroiusly wish these Head Honcho's would stop making life difficult for no damn reason and make things teh same! On one hand they create standards... on the other they create huge difficulties. At least we are half way there with HD resolutions being 720 and 1080 :o)

I hope you're right Steve. If they come out with a 25p version, I'll most likely buy it.

I found out that Steve is right. If this camera is to be released in PAL countires then it has to play 720p @ 25 fps. But I think I heard that JVC is not releasing it anywhere except for Japan and North America. Maybe Ken Freed knows...

There is one (good) reason why JVC might not do a 720p25.

Plasmas and projectors work at 720p60 so someone in Europe, China, Austrilia, or India can still use the HD1 or HD10 for private cinema.

Of course, they can't broadcast the matertal -- but there's no broadcast HD anyway!

Interesting that in a digital world -- with progressive displays -- it really makes no difference if the signal is 50Hz or 60Hz.

In fact, 60Hz is better since no flicker!

Australian HDTV standards
 

In Australia HDTV is 1080, the 720 standard is only being pushed by a multicultural station to save money for them. Commercial stations broadcast 1080..
