I was watching a small doc my friend shot in DV mode on the HD10. It's about my film for my DVD. Anyway, I walked around with a wireless unit, doing my interview at a putt putt course (don't ask).

I noticed the audio, when I was next to a fake waterfall, was acting weird. As I talked, the waterfall volume dropped, but as soon as a I shut up, even for a second, the waterfall volume increased, then dropped again when I started talking.

Hmm...

Heath,
The effect you noticed is caused by the AGC ( auto gain control). When something close to the Mic is louder, it reduces the gain, making the BG go quieter. When the louder sound stops, the circuit ups the gain to raise the background ambient sound to a higher value.

Hi Guys,

I've been shooting the auditions for our Docudrama (which shoots next week.) We are using double system sound with the HD-10 and a small shotgun as back up audio into the HD 10.

The main audio is a Fostex MR-8 (about $ 300) from the Azden SGM-2X(about $ 220). The results are good. We slate each shot and its easy to marry the audio to the video using Vegas and CineForm.

The MR-8 is a digital 2 input channel device that records to Compact Flash cards (mixes up to 8 channels total.)

Since I got the Azden after reading a review on DVInfo, I guess I should write a review of the Fostex MR-8 after we're done producing this video.
