HD10 audio report

OK -- with a "new" HD10.

1. No canned audio. This is the second "new" HD10 that has got good audio. Suspect first batch was bad.

2. It pumps

2. It doesn't pump

All depends on what you mean by "pump." I didn't hear any attempt to bring up the audio, so in reality I heard only a LIMITER.

And, it all depends on the background level.

Stuff shot on NYC streets, Central Park, subway, Fashion Week -- all sound great because the subject voice is about the same level as the background.

With mic near face so good rejection of background--no problem.

Very quiet room (e.g., soundstage) no background level to pump. No problems.

Indoors with soft background sounds and sudden LOUD voice. Yes, there is a momentary decrease in background level. With ordinary voices, you can hear the decrease and the increase after voice stops. Not good.

It's no wonder Heath didn't find the problem nor did I. But others have.

So for ENG it won't likely be a problem because of high ambinent noise and/or use of noise rejecting mic.

On a soundstage it should be fine.

But, for EFP it might pump, so Heath gets to use his DAT. Of course, background noise is still a problem when editing. So if one has a good shotgun for use with DAT, it might work fine with the camera too.

Lastly, don't use the any mic that hard mounts to the non-hot-shoe because it picks up motor HUUUUUM! Get an Azden with the shockmount or use the supplied XLR mount.

Interesting you said that. This is the mic I installed on my HD1. I just have it wired mono but I think it sounds pretty good.

Here is a clip I posted about the exposure crush issue. IMO it sounds pretty good.

The shock mount sgm-1x. I maybe should have gotten the 2x because it goes clear down to 40 Hz and it's dual barrel. But I was trying to keep the cost down.

Here is a picture of it mounted on my HD1

One thing, be sure to take a couple of spare batteries with you because it’s very easy to forget to shut it off.

You decided to use the huge JVC XLR rather than the nice tint shockmount the came with the mic?

You don't want response to 40HZ. You likely want the Low filter engaged in the mic.

Steve, do you have a serial# on the "new" batch? I'd like to know if my HD10 is new or old.

Mine is: 11860178

I think the "first" batch came around the first ship date. If you bought one in July you probably didn't get the first batch.
