HDV is on the air
 

I own the HD10, and have used it recently on a promo I produced for the TV station I work at in Tampa FL.
Shot in HD, down converted to uncompressed QuickTime in After Effects, edited in Uncompressed Digital on the Affinity Atmosphere.

The results were amazing! Looked very much like any other news image spot shot on film. The format allowed me to do significant amount of composting and color correction.

Here's something for all the people who "dis" this cam, I work with shooters who are at the top of the news game. Every one of them drooled over my camera. The images coming from this are nothing like the ones coming from our top of the line 3CCD Beta SX cameras.

Cool man! I know it's a lot to ask, but can we drool over the promo you mention? How about a post?? Pretty please!

I'm sure Chris Hurd would post it...we'll use it to shutup all the negative remarks regarding the HD10u.

What did you cut on with the HD10?

My production workflow went like this.

1. Shoot master footage at station.
2. Head home and digitize footage with HD capture utility.
3. Trim shots in MPEG Edit Studio.
4. Convert video steam to uncompressed AVI, convert audio to WAV
5. Create Graphics in Adobe Illustrator / Photoshop
6. Composite graphics over uncompressed clips in After Effects
7. Render converted clips to720x486 "letter boxed" to uncompressed quicktime.
8. burn these files to CD Rom
9. Return to station to edit the clips together in Accom Affinity (i mistakenly said Atmosphere before)
10. Suiten audio in Pro-Tools
11. Send to air.

Let you Creative services director know what we;ve done here in Tampa, and the positive results we're having.

What about chroma noise? It's bad on a short film I did.

I had absolutley no problems. The key may have been the lighting. I underexposed just a hair and lit with a nice soft riffa light from an almost head on direction. I used no fill, and a slight amber tinted backlight. I find the more I shoot with this, that if you treat it like a film camera rather than a video camera, youre results will be better. I even did some substatial color correction to the clip with no trouble at all.
I hoping to post the "beore and after" clips to show how a litle color correction can go a long way.

I am considering purchasing a JY-Hd10 for our production department. We currently use Sony Beta SX cameras, and the JY will be a supplemental camera. I've seen video shot with his camera, and it was very impressive.
I'm still unclear on how to capture the video into our editing systems. I understand it isn't yet possible on a Mac based editor. What about pc-based AVID Media Composers? We can import uncompressed video.
And what exactly is a "HD capture utility?"
Does the video come through on a firewire connection?
Is there a particular editing format anyone can recommend?
How about shooting in HD, but digitizing the video in DV?

I've been reading this forum for months, and I'm still confused.

BTW, JVC is finally releasing a player/recorder for this camera's HD tapes. It should be out within a few months, if not already.

The HD Capture utility is a little software program that allows you to digitize the HD MPEG footage from your camera (firewire link) into your hard drive. While the mechanics of this step are similar to DV capture, the actual process is very different.

You can also down convert on the fly to NTSC directly into your avid via the analog outputs. However if you can convert the digitized clips into quicklime or AVID files, you can use them on any platform with an effects compositor like after effects. Premiere will take the clips and re-size them for NTSC, I do not now about final cut pro.
