Underwater Housing for HD1/ HDTV Broadcast Image
 

Does anyone know of any company that rents the underwater housing case for the JVC HD cameras? I'm going on a trip to the Caribbean in April and I'd like to take some underwater footage.

Also, on an unrelated note: Most of the footage that I've viewed from the HD1 has been on my home 42" HDTV plasma display. The footage looks very good on the Plasma TV... But just a few days ago I took the camera into work (ABC in Los Angeles) and hooked the component outputs into one of our Sony Broadcast HDTV monitors. WOW!! All I can say is that the resolution blew me away. Many of my colleagues were stunned that this camera could produce such detailed images for less than $3500. Some of the footage that I had shot along the coast looked as if we were looking at a still photograph.

Unfortunately, everyone also commented on the chroma noise.

If JVC could find a fix for the chroma noise issue, they'd have a truly magnificent piece of equipment.

Yeah, the chroma noise is more visible in darkly lit areas. This is something I need to address before I output my short film.

I've been looking for one of these too. I am not sure yet that I want to spend the money to buy though and renting might be the thing to do.

But either way, this is the one you should get:

Maybe you should contact them to find renters in your area, or try and rent from them. Ewa Marine makes some cheap ones, but I don't think they have this model out yet, and their housings always seem a little freaky to put such an expensive thing in (but they do work).

Another thing might be to find a general purpose housing that fits it. . .

I am not sure if this is the right size, but I think they make others, and I'm sure these general purpose ones are more available for renting.

Oh, and if you find any remarkable deals let me know. . .

JVC makes a housing that we just tested for a new DVD. It works very well and is the least expensive UW housing I have ever found.

I think the cost is about $1000.00 retail.

Visit the JVC web site and visit the accessories page for pictures and info.

I have about 40 minutes of UW HDV footage taken with the camera and it is amazing.

Hi,
i got the JVC underwater housing, it's great but the ikelite version seems to have a few more controls and the wide lens option would be fantastic..
But the JVC version works fine, amazing footage.
You can't adjust any settings underwater so I trick the white balance by manually balancing to a slightly greenish white card upstairs that reduces the water discolouration..

Does anyone have any updates on their experiences using the JVC HDV cam at depth? I just got back from Bonaire (a pre- and post-Ivan trip), and I used my new HD10U on the trip. I'd be interested in what others have learned (especially in the area of chroma noise), as I've came late to the game. I plan on posting what I have learned using the HD10U and Gates Housing underwater. It's definately a different beast shooting U/W then on land.

Well, Ivan made a u-turn, as did Jeanne (great for us in South Florida), so I'm going to be shooting some HD10 footage. No underwater housing, though.

Wow, I didn't realize those two were still causing havoc. I spent an extra 5 days on Bonaire due to Ivan, and just squeezed out while Jeanne was making a mess of Puerto Rico. We were evacuated from the coast during Ivan (at the time a cat 5), but I have some footage of before and after (above and below) as well as a documentation of the dock being smashed to kindling by the waves Ivan left behind. Anyway, off-topic...

no sweat, bobby. let's put our HD10s to use (and HD1s), those of us living near the Hurricane ground zeroes!
