Just Arrived But I'm confused........
 

Just received my HD10U and the battery is charging up.

I was under the impression that It would have a standard Firewire
cable input.

I use a Mac G5 Dual 2.ghz

How do I capture with my G5? USB only?

Tom,

Check out the HD10's manual, which is included with the camera, to help answer your questions.

The firewire port is on the left side, when you open the LCD. It's on the bottom, hidden by a removable (but on a "hinge") piece of black rubber. You'll also see the component input/output.

To do A/V input/output, it's on the right side, also hidden by a smaller removable piece of black rubber.

For beginners, I strongly recommend the HDV Training DVD, which I gave a favorable review. The website is down as producer Darren Kelly prepares a new site with new training DVDs! I'll post a link ASAP!

Oh, and to capture and put back to tape, and also to prepare your captured clips for Final Cut Pro editing, I strongly recommend Lumiere HD.

I guess my confusion was that I need a 1394 (iLink) cable to the
"Normal" firewire end for my Mac. (The Mac does not have iLink.

Am I correct in assuming this?

There are three types of FireWire cables. Six pin to six pin (required for Macs), six pin to four pin (needed for some laptops, PC's and devices) and four pin to four pin (required by some PC's). You may need a different cable and they are generally available from stores like CompUsa.

iLink is a Sony thing. It is Firewire, they just didn't want to pay Apple to use the name. iLink=Firewire (ieee 1394).

It's four pin (the camera), and your Mac is six pin, so buy a 4 pin to 6 pin firewire cable, and you'll be fine.

I have the jump start guide. Ordered with the camera
from B&H (how could I not being a novice and having read
your review)

Was surprised to find two dics in the DVD holder,
A "goodie" disc as well.

Purchased the Camera as a Demo at a good price. I would
never do this unless it was B&H where I get ALL of my
Pro Still Photog' equipment.

Rest of the stuff was Normal Prices.
Only a very small scratch on the tripod Mounting plate.

I'm going to spend a lot of time learning and then try
to break into shooting HD for Martial Arts events which
is a awesome market. (Hundreds of events each month)

but I am a video novice but have good 'tog skills and do
pretty well in the large format printing business.
