JVC GY-HD101E with 1/25 Shutter Speed
 

Hey guys,

Just bought a JVC GY-HD101E. I haven't had a chance to record anything yet or look at any footage (cause I don't own a HD capable TV), but just from looking at the view finder, I noticed that when I used 720P at 25P with a 1/25 shutter, it gave it that 'film like' flow as opposed to 1/50 very sharp like feel. Does anyone here shoot with 1/25 for a more 'slow' effect?

While shooting with 1/50 is considered standard and is much more traditional, I do recall on one occasion setting the shutter to 1/25 because I was after a more "filmic" look. It was done purely as an aesthetic choice at that time and it worked quite well. But note that I wasn't capturing anything with rapid motion. Motion blur [when there are quick movements by the subject(s) in your frame] can be a VERY big problem if you decide to shoot at 1/25 (or 1/24 with 24p). That's one reason why 1/50 is normally recommended.

I also recommend that you shoot a bit of footage, load it into your NLE and then play it back to decide if you really do like the look and feel of the 1/25 shutter.

Because I think (and I am only going from vague memory here and so I could be wrong) that the LCD screen and/or viewfinder might show the images at 50 fps rather than the 25 fps that you are actually recording to tape.
