HD 200 frame rate/shutter speed stills and video
The following are frame grabs and video that I shot today with the HD200 at varying frame rates and shutter speeds. All these were shot with Tim's DSC CDM28 Chart settings. I also used two ND fliters (most times), no gain, 20mm zoom, aperture ranging from 3.5 to 6.0. All shots were taken usiing one 4x4 Tiffen polarizing filter in a Chrosziel mattebox.

Thanks for the clips. I own an HD100 and was curious how 30p shot at 1/30 would look compared to the standard 1/60 shutter.
It looks like I could use 1/30 for low light wedding reception style events with minimal strobing. It's nice to see the 60p footage of the HD200's. It looks really nice! |
I agree Scott. I often wonder what look would work best where and why, so I finally just went out and shot the boat load of them. I'm uploading all of the 30 and 60fps samples overcranked to 24fps now. Glad it helped!

Always on the ball, never drops the ball! This is a great reference for motion variation with frame rate and shutter. I'd missed this last year, and it deserves a bump up the list. Scott - if you're still following, strobing isn't a danger when slowing the shutter speed to 1/30 in 30p - it's blur that's an issue. It's more acceptable to the eye with a fixed camera, but watch out when you start panning. Or grooving around handheld... These settings all have a different reaction to CAMERA movement too, which one should get familiar with. ------------------------------------ Eric, can you repeat this test, while panning the camera at the several fixed rates throughout the settings. ...and without dropping the ball? just kidding! (you have to be careful when posting in forums late at night) |
Eric you deserve a HUGE pat on the back and thank you for doing this. I would imagine it could serve as an invaluable reference point to anyone starting out in video / film making. It's an immediate reference point.

Stuart, tell him it's not the fall that rips your limbs off, it's what stops you. You won't ever see me in a full tuck on a highway. Get him out on the track, even just for track days (one fee, you ride all day as fast as you want, crash where you're expected to, ambulances there, etc. etc.). Once he's been on a track he'll ride the street like a grandpa. Hopefully..
