Vh Balance & Frequencies

Hi to All,
Small question, shooting a lot of yachting and water sports, was hoping to expand my limited knowledge on how to best set the V/H balance and frequencies to give me a more even and smoother look with ocean chop etc, last shoot looked a little messy, admittedly my detail was too high.Since then have reduced it down to -2 also.
Thanking in advance.
