Hissing noise with hd100 firestore.
 

Hey, guys. I have the hd100 Firestore, and I've encounterd a major, major problem. All right, here it is: When I import footage from the firestore to my timeline, there's a hissing noise... At first, I thought it was just the fan on the hard-drive, causing the noise, so I just kind of shrugged it off. So, I used my boom mic, and the noise was still there. I recorded to a tape next, and the noise wasn't there. So, I unplugged my mic completely, so there was no audio being recoreded. I imported the footage from the firestore with no audio, and the noise was STILL there. I called focus and they said they've never encountered this before. I have a feeling in my gut there's something not grounded right in my camcorder (i got the 110). Has anyone ever encountered this before? Also, on another note, I did have my camera serviced a couple months ago, because my idx batteries weren't getting any power. Hopefully I don't have to send my cam back to JVC here again...

I have had an audio fault on an HD101 and an HD111. It was an intermittent "fizzing" sound, but only using phantom power.

What does your hiss sound like? Is it constant?

Yes, The fuzzy/hissing/mysterious noise is constant.

Sounds like a different problem. I picked up my camera from JVC today and it seems that the fault has disappeared although they claim to have done nothing.

I tried recording without phantom power. Sadly, the problem is still there... This is just ridiculous.

Have you tried recording to tape then importing from there?

If that works fine it sounds like a Firestore problem.

If you get the frying sound off the tape as well it's a camera problem.

What are you getting through the headphone output whilst recording? Is it clean or frying?

If it's clean on recording, is it frying on tape playback straight off the camera?

I think you need to do a bit more elimination testing.

PS. Just re - read your post and spotted the bit about recording to tape, which I missed first and second time through.

Did you try importing the recorded tape into your NLE?

Have you tried hooking the camera directly to the NLE and listening to what's coming off the camera "live" via the firewire?

If the answer to these two questions is "yes" and there was no frying sound, then it looks like it's the Firestore for sure and not a camera problem.

I've encountered this problem with a Sony DVCAM 250P, it was related to the 12V power tap with the Lemo plug on the camera - it hissed even when nothing was connected. The Sony broadcast repair fixed the problem, but I've never again used any camera's audio inputs for my main sound recording, only for syncing purposes.

Have had problems similar with FCP
 

I've had similar problems with FCP and it drove me nuts! - until i found out that there was a glitch with the cached audio file on my project timeline. Just throwing it out there in case you have a similar problem.

Wow! Guess I'm lucky, I've never had any problems like this. All of my audio problems have been traceable to operator error.

Jon, this happens even with raw footage... Tomorrow, I'm gonna get a different cam, and find out whether or not it's the hard-drive or my 110. If it turns out to be my cam, it'll be my 3rd time getting it serviced, which is just retarded. I'm seriously regretting making the switch over to jvc from canon. If this can't be solved, I want my money back. Since the begining it's been one giant headache.
