What can I convert HDV to besides HD-SDI?

Are there converters to convert HDV to anything else besides HD-SDI, like component, VGA, DVI, HD15 etc?
Thanks

Michael,

Unless I misunderstand your question.....To take full advantage of the HD-SDI or HDMI outputs of camcorders that have such outputs, you capture the output "live" while shooting the subject. The output is sent to a computer which has an appropriate capture card, and from there to a hard disk (or RAID array of hard disks). That way, the signal is never degraded by going through HDV encoding. Granted, it's a bit awkward to be lugging all that equipment around when you're shooting, but I suspect we will soon see compact HD-SDI or HDMI recorders that can mount on your camcorder. (Actually, I think I read somewhere that they exist already. Probably a bit pricey at this time.)

Hi Ken,

Thanks for your reply. But I think you did misunderstood my question.
I don't mean to capture from a converted HDV signal.
What I want is to know my options in terms of what can I convert the HDV firewire out to? Are there for example HDV to component converters? How about HDV to DVI etc?
This was what I meant.
Thanks again.

The Convergent Design HD Connect LE offers analog component along with composite output of HDV source material in real-time.

Michael,

Well, this is getting a bit over my head (not that that's ever stopped me from talking as if I were an expert). However, I think you're best bet would be to research capture hardware from AJA or BlackMagicDesign. You might be able to take the signal in from your firewire port, then output through the card.

BTW, are you talking about converting while you're shooting, or doing the conversion after the shoot?

Also, since this is the JVC forum, I assume you have either HD110, HD200, or HD250, all 3 of which have analog component out.

Hi Michael..........

Here's hoping I understand the question..........

Whether there are dedicated converters to do only the conversions you ask (simple, plug in, plug out type things) I really can't say. Certainly never heard of any but that's nothing new.

There is/ are however, depending on your definition, generic converters all over the place. The simplest I can think of is a laptop with 1394 in, DVI out/ Component out etc and the appropriate software to do the capture and fire it to the screen & outputs.

From posts here on DVinfo I believe there are other solutions, all more involved and expensive, that do even more.

I suppose the question that needs to be asked is: What exactly do you want to do? Or is this a general "what if" type inquiry?

I want to convert when shooting. Take it straight from the firewire port and convert it to component for example. The Convergent Design HD Connect LE seems to do exactly what I need. However it also has HD-SDI which I don't need and so would not like to pay for. Is there a cheaper alternative to it? but that is the type of thing I'm looking for.
Thanks again.
