JVC 201 and a three-way firewire hub!

Hi everyone!

Just thought some may be interested in a setup I put together tonight which worked very well. I have read of rumours of this working on DVInfo but no solid confirmation, so here goes... I wanted to be able to record to the DR-HD100 at the same time as monitoring output using a 17 inch laptop running Adobe OnLocation. Solution was to put a three-way firewire hub on the camera (in my case the 201). At first nothing happened. Terrified of blowing the firewire port, I was relunctant to power the hub separately, believing the camera or laptop would be sufficient. But in fact that was the solution -I rigged up a 9V/300ma power supply to the hub and it all came to life!

There were some initial setup issues -firstly the DR-HD100 needs to be set on LOCAL (meaning you have to individually push record on it -it would not work as a slave to the camera, but this is a minor hassle) and also OnLocation defaults to a camera capture setting and also an audio off setting (both of which can be rectified in the field monitor menu). But within a few minutes I had it all setup where I can record simultaneously to THREE sources (if I wanted to!): 1. Tape, 2. DR-HD100 and 3. the laptop/external drive. In the case of the laptop it is enough just to monitor it with the waveform and vectorscope, but the option is there to record it also.

This setup is intended for an important corporate film to be shot next week in Portugal... so far so good! Its also great to be able to instantly review footage from the DR-100 through the camera to the laptop -including the audio! And saves checking-in a bulky field monitor at the airport!
