JVC 250 720p vs 1080i
 

I am looking to purchase the JVC GY-HD250. My editing software does not currently support 720p. My understanding is I can use the DR-HD100 recorder with the JVC 250 and record in 1080i.

Can any one confirm this?

I use the Firestore HD100, and as far as I'm aware it doesn't record 1080i. I believe it just records whatever the camera feeds it.... so if the camera is feeding 720p it records 720p. Perhaps if you connected it to a camera that fed it 1080i it would record that, but I do not believe it converts between formats.

Just curious.... what software are you using that doesn't support 720p?

The HD250s don't record 1080i
 

to tape, nor do they output through firewire, max is 720p, but they do have a feature where they can convert 720p to 1080i output via the built-in HD-SDI and component analog terminals.

from the spec sheet:

1080/60i: 74.25/1.001 MHz (4:2:0 component, up
conversion only), 1080/50i: 74.25 MHz (4:2:0 component, up conversion only)

You can do a easy upconversion in your NLE, 720p scales well to 1080i. 720p temporal resolution is better though.

What editing software are you using? I wouldn't let the software limit your camera choice. I'm using vegas and it cuts 720p and 1080i without a hitch. And I know that there are a lot of other editors that do the same for not much money. Let us know what your using.

Premiere also supports 720 p (liscensed from Cineform)... Our experience is that Cineform works GREAT... While a little expensive, it is well worth the $$$

The product you're probably thinking of is Convergent-Design's Flash XDR.

I am using the Macro Systems line of editors, CASABLANCA.

These editors will do simple straight cuts on 720p but all the special effects will not currently work. I have a ton of software that works great but if I change software then I also have to change hardware. Besides expensive I would have to learn all new software.

If I could get the JVC 250 into my editor at 1080i then I would not have a problem. Someday I think Macro Systems will fix the 720p interface problem.
I was hoping a hard disk drive would make the capture at 1080i and solve the problem.
