Firewire clarification

It is now axiomatic that both the JVC and the computer should switched off before connecting firewire cables.

Is it sufficient for the computer, in this case a Mac, to be in sleep mode or is is necessary to actually turn the computer off? I have noticed that even in sleep mode the firewire ports still are passing power to devices.
