DR-HD100 Question
 

I am not sure if this is particular post would go under this particular section of the forum or under Non-linear Editing W/Macs....but I hope someone can answer this for me

I am shooting with a Gy-hd200 and DR-hd100 (files are 720p60 .mov format)...My question is regarding the Quicktime files that are recorded within the DR-hd100....

Are they still HDV files in their original compressed form? (reason I ask is because it takes forever when trying to compress them into a format DVD SP can recognize)

Would I benefit in Quality or make it less processor intensive during editing/compression if I recorded them in a .MOV Format and later convert them to via Apple Pro Res HQ via MPEG Streamclip or even Clip Wrap? (Hard drive space is not a problem for me)

Hi Akbar. Your mileage may vary, but I've discovered that if shooting HD, I need to shoot in M2T mode to get usable audio with my DR-HD100. If you're rolling DV footage, it does just fine in QuickTime, but the HDV QT mode is busted, as far as I can tell.

Hey now that you mention that...I do need to check on the audio levels when recording .m2t files Vs. .mov files.........crap another thing to worry about!! =).....I do know that there is a difference in the way Audio is recorded when shooting DV as oppose to HDV.....I think HDV in general is something like MPEG-1 level 2..I can't recall exactly but all I know audio with Shooting DV is superior than HDV...

It's actually not a level issue. It's just a dirty recording. Lots of stutters. The tape is fine, and the audio works fine in M2T mode. But not in QT HD.

You won't do anything to improve quality by transcoding to ProRes. But, if you are using a Mac, you can digitize material using a special HDV -> ProRes 422 method, which would be beneficial in many cases.

The same MPEG-2 stream is wrapped into MOV on the DR-HD100, so there is no transcoding for the video stream. Personally I have not encountered any problems using the MOV mode from the DR-HD100. I'm using the latest firmware available.

Well, like I said, your mileage may vary. I ended up contacting Focus Enhancements over the problem, and the nice support guy told me he had "heard of that problem," and offered me a nice upgrade deal to the new MR-HD100. I can't justify the purchase right now, having just bought the DR-HD100 less than a year ago. I am sure it doesn't affect everyone. I'm running the most current firmware, too.
