60i vs 60p
 

If you knew that your final product is SD only - would you use 60i or 60p on your GY-HD1xx? Workflow is not an issue, can do both. Is the picture smoother/cleaner with either one?

I intend to test this myself later on but have no time right now.

smoother - i, cleaner - p. But generally I'd stick to interlaced just to avoid the extra step, but if that's not an issue...

If we are talking GY HD100, the options are 60i vs 30p or 50i vs 25p in my case. Plus 24p in both cases.

I usually shoot 50 interlaced on SD for documentary stuff for "smooth reality" and 25p for commercials where for a "it's a real commercial" look. Takes more care with moves of course but worthwhile if thats what you are after.

50p or 60p would be as smooth as 50i but better resolution and kinda hyper-real looking but 30p or 25p are naturally flickerier.

Not sure what the PAL model has, but mine has both 60i and 60P in standard definition.

The PAL version also has an option for HDV standard definition, HDV-SD50P.
It shoots a standard definition 16.9 image progressive scan. Clean and smooth.

if you sticking with SD, I would say 60p if your system can capture it... it's the SAME smoothness as 60i as in framerate, and if you ever want to extract 24p from it, you have full res frames instead half res interlaced frames for converting. Also better for slow motion playback. Personally I shoot 24p for everything unless I want slow motion then I'll shot SD 60p for later capture and retiming with Cinema Tools (Mac) but there are plenty of PC apps.

Thanks everyone, I came to the same conclusion after a few tests.

I now shoot 720P24 if I know for sure what is going to happen (have the time for slow pans/zooms, etc).

For unpredictable action or shoulder mount, I shoot 480P60 - nice clean full frames, it even uprezzes nicely to 720P. Have not tried slowing it down, but it should be the best for that too.
