Slomo?

I've read somewhere that the HD100 can make 50P or 60P (depending on where you live) to DV (not HD) Is this true?

Anyone with some slomotion sample footage?

regards,
Andreas

It was the first thing I tested. It will shoot 480p60 or 576p50 on the HD100. I'm not sure if the HD101 will do 480p60.

It doesn't use the DV codec (that wouldn't work.) Instead, it records SD resolution in the mpeg2 transport stream (HDV.)

On a Mac, the process is simple. Shoot at 480p60, digitize with DVHSCap, use MPEG Streamclip to convert the m2t file (480p60) to a DV quicktime file at 60fps, then use Cinema Tools to "conform" the DV file to 23.98. That's it. Now you have a 23.98 file that was overcranked.

LINK NO LONGER ACTIVE.

Link doesn't work Tim.

I did some digging because I was really interested in seeing the
clip, I hope I didn't dig to deep though.

Lots of artifacts and dropped frames. But the slomo effect works.

T.Dashwood,

Can you try the 60p again and post an m2t? I'd like to do some test with it.

I saw Tim's clip when he originally posted it. Looked perfect at the time.

If you're seeing something besides perfect 60fps slo-mo, something's wrong viewing the Quicktime.

Yeah, you need a pretty fast computer to playback 720p24 in H264. I drop frames on a G4, but a G5 works perfectly. The artifacts were introduced by conversion to DVCPRO HD, then encode to H264 @ 2Mb/sec.

That's weird that the link didn't work for some of you. I find it is best to right-click and download, then play in QT7 player. Otherwise you sit there for 30 minutes while the whole thing loads into IE.

Anyway, here's the link to the original m2t 480p60 capture. (96Mb)

And here's a smaller MPG1 320x240 (squeezed anamorphic) encoded from the DV file after it was conformed to 23.98. (27Mb)

I apologize for the shoddy camerawork. I was trying to direct my 3-year old and shoot at the same time. Kids and animals!

Processed m2t file

I brought the file into Liquid. It came in as 59.94 so I dropped in on a 59.94 mpeg2 MP@HL timeline and it played at normal speed.

Then I took the file a put it on a 24P timeline and rendered it out to wmv (low datarate).

Click here to view slomo wmv

Take a look at the motion and disregard the low datarate please. The motion is good and the results look OK on my screen. It works...

Tim,

Any chance of getting you to shoot 60P on anything else? Like traffic?
Perhaps someone running with the camera on a tripod?

I found it hard to really judge the material that was shot.

Regards,
Andreas

Like I've said before in other threads, this is the very first thing I shot with the camera a month ago. It was not intended as a technical test, but did clearly demonstrate that the "overcranking" method works as expected.
Since then, I have also shot some waterfalls at 576p50, but that is tough to reference motion.
I'm doing a low-light night shoot tonight with an actor, so I will add slo-mo overcrank to the list of things to shoot.

I understand, I'm not that picky about the subject really and I'm not into all that technical testing. If I like the picture I like the picture...

But I had a hard time to really get a feel for the slomotion, and would be very grateful for some other shots. Are there any chance of seeing the tings you shoot/have shot in 60p?

By the way, I visisted your homepage and saw your reel, good work!

Kind regards,
Andreas

That would be interesting to see. Looking forward.

Ok. Here's a small MP4 of 480p60 (59.94) conformed back to 23.98. This was thrown into the middle of a low-light test, so please only judge motion, not lighting. I'll post the low-light test results within 24 hours.
