SD Lens w/ 2x onto HD250...Thoughts?
 

Our studio has a pair of HD-250s and I managed to also get my hands on a KY-27 with a Canon J15x95BI12U lens. I'm happy with the results the 1/3" stock Fujinon lens gives me but I'd like to have the 2x for some event shooting. A few questions:

--What kinds of problems might arise from using a converter?

--How much quality difference will I see from using an SD studio lens on an HD camera?

--Will I run into any major issues with the zoom & iris controls?

converter like this? Don't know, thought about it for several years myself. Butthat would be better than one that goes on the front of the lens.

As far as lenses, if your using the stock 16x any SD or HD lens will be better. if your using any of the SD or HD Fujinon 17x lenses they are all of nearly equal quality... That is to say both are far better than the 16x lens.

On a 1/3" sensor, a SD 2/3" lens image may be observably soggy, especially with the doubler selected and on the long end of the zoom. There have been varying results from SD lenses on the JVC HD camera family reported here on dvinfo in the past. Some SD lenses came up to HD standard, others did not.

HD-250s used with Canon HD 2/3" lenses for a cooking show I stopped in on, looked very nice indeed.

The last months I have been working on adapting JVC GY-HDxx to Box lenses.

The old second hand 20x7 box lens with extender gives a factor x2 with the 2/3" to 1/3" adapter.
Resulting in a stunning 40x or 80x zoom range! Far sharper then the 16x stock lens.
Because the 1/3" chip is only looking through the center-part of the lens (which is the best part of the lens), the results are very good.
Just stay below 2.8 for the Iris, as otherwise there is a bloom visible at wide angles.
I tested multiple 2/3" to 1/3" adapters to get to the right result. The cheap adapters one can find on eBay didn't give charp results.
The MTB413B adapter is very precise and gives HD results on older SD Boxlenses.
I had to disassemble the whole handrest of the camera before the camera fit's to the lens.
Clients are happy that I can offer 40x 80x zoom ranges now at a very affordable price for them with a very sharp result.
