Transition Fron GY-DV5000
 

Thinking of transitioning from my DV5000 to a HD100. Mainly because I have all the DV tape equipment and thought this might be a inexpensive start into HD video.

Any comments appreciated.

Well you can get into it cheap, but honestly the 720p HDV days are long in the rear view mirror. Looking at my footage from 8 years ago that I'm putting on blu ray for a friend and surprised how mediocre it looks compared to my JVC LS300, that and getting modern software to recognize (mac) the old HDV footage. You can pick up a HD100/110 for about $500 and maybe a lens. the 16x Fujinon was pretty amateurish but if you kept it f8 or f11 the CA and other imperfections went away while zoomed in past 4mm and around f4 when below 30mm. my 17x Fujinon lens was much better. The 17x at it's softest was sharper than the 16x Fujinon at it's sharpest. But throwing my 4K C4K J-Log up on a store's LG OLED shot with a $250 16mm Rokinon Cine lens.. that was pretty amazing looking and the store employees where stunned. The old 720p JVC HDV footage, though good in it's day is not inspiring by today's standards at all. But it all depends what you want to do. I do like the powered ENG lenses on the JVC PRO-HD line.. as long as it wasn't the 16x Fujinon... but even the better $3,000 to $5,000 lenses exhibit some CA and other issues being on such a small sensor 1/3 vs a super 35 like on a JVC LS300.

IF you do go HDV route I wouldn't pay much money for one. Though mine has 100's of work hours and 1,000's of fan hours and it works as good as it was when it was new and it's been through a lot of abuse. Today's cameras are not built as well, but the newer imagers, codecs and resolutions rule.

Thanks for reply - got a HD100 that needed a viewfinder and battery. Bought another HD-100 for parts and a new AB battery, spent more for a new battery and charger then the two HD-100's. Also got Tim Dashwood's PRoHD DVD Vol 1, seems to be some good info in their. Now to set one up and take some test videos, have to get ready for grandkids baseball games and dance recital. Hopefully all of this will produce better results then the very old VHS camcorder I started with in the early 80's. FYI before that 8mm film.
