HDV to DV conversion

I've heard that HDV can be downconverted to DV through the firewire output. How is this achieved? I need to combine some DV footage to the downconverted HDV footage on the same PPro timeline.

The HDV camera will have to have that capability. In other words it has the ability to capture in HDV, and then down convert at time of capture. All the Sony HDV cams have that ability.

I am not sure what Premiere version you are using, but you could also capture and convert in Premiere, assuming you have the proper version. PPro 1.51 or 2.0.

HDV to DV conversion

I'm using the JVC HD100 and I thought this camera could accomplish that feat, but I can't seem to get it to work.

m2t

You will only get M2T files (native HDV) through the firewire on th gy-hd100.
Conversion shouldt be possible during live capture via component out.
Depending on your NLE you should let this handle the conversion.

regards

To clarify, the HD100 will not downconvert to DV/Firewire. Only will downconvert to analog component or composite.

Will not downconvert to DV/Firewire while recording to HDV, or will not do it at all? If not, what is your recommended workflow for getting to SD signal on DV tape (considering that I'm in a non-HD Avid environment unlike Bill)?

Trung, I spoke to a couple JVC reps on Friday and got answers to my question and yours as well.

Both the JVC camera (HD100) and deck (BR HD50u) will do downconversions but the output mode is analog component via RCA jacks, so as long as you have a deck that will take that input you're good -- no capture cards needed.

Trung,

Check the "HDV PB Output menu setting on the Video Format menu screen. This controls what kind of signal comes out of the analog outputs on the right side of the camera. You can upconvert, down convert, and cross convert. The output signal is composite analog or component analog. If you need to then capture this signal to a NLE, you will need a capture card of some sort.

It is not possible to downconvert via the firewire.

Check page 63 of your owner's manual for details on this menu.

Regards, Carl
