Hard Disk Recorder Advice
 

I'm thinking about adding a hard disk recorder to my HD-100 and I'm curious what you guys would advise regarding the DR-HD100 vs. the new Firestore's and other brands out there.

Best bang for buck?

i've got a couple of fs-4HD's that work really well. they're a lot cheaper than the fs100's, but, then, they don't power up when the hd100 powers up.

The DR-HD100 has the following advantages over the FS-4:

1. Status in the viewfinder/LCD monitor - you can see in the viewfinder how many minutes are available on the drive, and you can see what mode it is in. This assures you that the drive is getting a good signal, and that it is rolling when it's supposed to. I think this is really important to know!

2. Power Management - when you turn the camera off, the drive will shut off as well


3. Split Record - allows you to program the camera so that one start button will roll only the tape, and another start button will roll only the drive.


Some nice features that are worth the small difference in price.

what is the difference in price between the units?

Another Question about Firestores:
 

Can the firestore record to 480p while the camera shoots to tape in 720p or vice versa?

The drive for with the special features for the JVC camera is $100 cheaper at B&H for the same capacity as the straight FS4.

the 40Gb drives are the ones I was referring to: $899

I just saw them at another site for $699. That's starting to be a pretty big price difference. I notice 24p is not listed as a supported format. I'm sure it is - but can you verify it handles 24p OK?

Set the mode to "tapeless" and trigger recording .m2t to the hard drive without headwear on the tape transport.

Keep in mind that the Focus FS4HD-40GB DOES NOT give you the following functions, which the JVC DR-HD100-40 DOES give you:

No. The record mode menu in the camera controls the record mode for both tape and HDD.

Is it possible to play a tape in camera and record back onto the DR-HD100? I was thinking of using this option if possible for backing up to a rev drive for archival (record to HDD then copy the M2T files to either a back up drive or REV drive)

Maybe. I will check that today while I'm working a trade show.

For those that already use the hard drive recording systems, has anyone ever had any problems with missing files, missed shots etc. or does everyone still roll tape at the same time? Just curious, thinking about going this route but wondered about the consistency and the firewire plug.
