back focus

Would an improperly set up back focus affect shots where no zooming occurs?

Tim Dashwood January 17th, 2007 12:41 PM

It could on the wide end if it was really out of whack, causing a "macro" effect. Generally though, if you are focusing by eye after the frame size/zoom is set, then you should be able to compensate and find sharp focus at some point on the barrel.

Yes, especially at the wide end of the zoom, an incorrect backfocus will result in soft shots at the shorter focal lengths where this setting is most critical.

The macro setting does throw off the backfocus in order to focus closer, but you have to focus by eye using the macro ring at the focal length you're using, so you can't zoom.

word to the wise, I've found that checking the back focus on the stock lens every time I shoot is a good thing.
