BR-HD50 not recognized by Windows XP - ?

Hi there,

I stumbled across a stupid problem with our BR-HD50 deck. We've had it for almost a year, but used it only for watching/dubbing footage until now. Last week I tried to connect it via FireWire to a new dual-core PC running Windows XP with service pack 2 and Premiere Pro 2.

In DV mode everything is fine, the deck shows up in the system, Premiere recognizes and controls it correctly, capture is smooth. If the output switch of the deck is switched to HDV, it's a total mess. When powered on, the deck does not show up as an "AV/C Tape device" in the Windows Device Manager as it should, but as a "61883 Class Bus Device" plus an exclamation sign. No communication with Premiere and no capture, of course.

I connected the HD-100 camcorder instead - it worked almost seamlessly with both DV and HDV output. Swapped all FireWire cables available in the studio - no change for the deck. Installed all possible Windows updates available - nothing. Installed a demo of Cineform's Aspect HD hoping that it might have some drivers that were missing - no change either.

Has anyone had a similar problem? The strangest thing is that I can't find any related info for the BR-HD50 deck on the Web. There are some posts in different forums describing similar problems with DV decks back in 2003, but it seems that Windows has updated its IEEE 1394 drivers since then.

Any info would be welcome - we've got to batch capture some 160-180 (!) tapes for two large documentaries, and I wouldn't be happy to run the camera back and forth while the stupid deck is sitting in the corner...

Regards:

Boris

P.s.

Forgot to mention that both camera and deck are the PAL versions.

Update

Just for the record: since the same problem appeared with the deck attached to a few different PCs and Macs, we tested the deck in a studio that runs another BR-HD50 with FCP. With identical menu settings their deck worked fine in HDV mode, ours had no signs of communication with the edit suite.

Result: rented the other deck for the weekend, sending our deck for repair and expecting temporary replacement from the JVC dealer.

Good luck to all:

Boris
