OUCH serious problem
 

Hello guys.

Short and sweet.
Filming a rock concert, on stage, HD110U.

Sat camera near edge (Well about 3 feet)

Guitarist kicked it off stage (Not intentionaly)

Camera fell about 10 feet and hit hard on the lens hood.
Had heart attack.
Jumped off stage to rescue my baby.

Power up. Fine.
Record. Fine
Try to zoom. Fine
Try to focus. DEAD.

I can zoom in and out as normal.
All features work on the lens except for Focus.

Question with very straight answers only please.


Better to have JVC fix it or better to just buy new lens.
Easy to take apart and fix myself? Fellow videographer said sounds like the focus fell off the track.

Can try to focus, but at a certain point, it feels like I'm going to break the glass if I keep trying to hard.

I just need to know timeline for getting it jvc fixed as well as (And I've looked) replacement cost for lens for sale for jvchhd110u.

I would rule out fixing it yourself.

You should buy a new lens, or send it off to be repaired. Know one can know the actual cost because the service centers won't tell you until the repair is finished, but if you have the stock lens then expect to pay more than 60% of the lens value to get it fixed.

I would turn it in to my insurance company. The fall may have also bent the bayonet mount so you'll want the entire camera looked at, not just the lens.

JVC probably doesn't even fix the lens. They'll send it on to Fujinon to be worked on and JVC will deal with the camera portion. I'm not sure how long the turnaround for the entire process would be.

If you do buy a new lens keep the old one as spare parts, sell it off "as-is" and make a couple hundred back on it, or at that point try and fix it yourself since it's a second lens.

How do you kick a camera 3 feet? Rock'n'roll, I guess.

I'd send the lens in for service and send the bill to the guitarist.

Try and claim for a new camera and lens. If possible, from the band's insurance.

Buy a new (better) lens. It's the perfect opportunity to get better glass. Try to get insurance to pay for the old lens (approx value $800).

Of all the things that can go wrong with a camera, the focus control not working anymore is definitely a first. How does that happen?

any suggestions for lenses guys?

Check out the Fujinon 17x lens. Runs around $3000. Best option for the price.

The other lenses start around $8K I think.

No "Real" difference in the specifics of the lenses I see except that the 17x is fully manual. What would a price estimation be to send this and have it fixed anyway, maybe $700-$800?

the 17x will give you less CA than the 16x.

do a search here on the lens and you will see a lot of happy people have upgraded to the 17x. it is also wider and a little bit longer on the tele.

worth the upgrade from what I can tell. I want to play with one first before making that decision.

i would guess that your repair will be about the cost of replacing the lens. $800 - $1000. Just a guess though.
