Compression Rate in the HD100 HD200
 

So I am editing a feature right now I a shot with the HD100 and the HD 200 (slow mo) and my editor told me the compression rate is like 2MB per second which he says is REALLY compressed, and that some of the other cameras are like 5/6mb or higher per second, giving you a much less compressed picture, thus a better quality picture.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me please.

Anyway to get less compression?

The compression rate is: HDV1 format, 8-bit, 19.7 Mbps (progressive).

Have you noticed compression artifacts in your footage? If it's not a problem then don't make it one. If it is a problem, then I would try to deal with it using a de-artifact plugin like Magic Bullet...

Shooting uncompressed (or less compressed) could be an option for the future...but that has it's own set of headaches.

Also, keep an eye on your editor...sounds like he is trying to make excuses.

The HD100's data rate is around 3 megs a second.

The Z1 and others that use HDV2 (25/mbs) have a data rate of 3.6 megs a second, the same as standard DV.

Datarate isn't the end all be all measure of picture quality. HDV2 1080i interlaced 25Mbps has a higher datarate because it has to work harder to get the same amount of picture information as 720p HDV 19Mbps. Both look great though. DVCPro HD is 100Mb/s, but scales back to 960x540 from 1280x720. But it looks great. Trust your eyes!!!

DVCPRO100 does not resample vertical resolution. It's 960x720 in 720p mode.

I do see some artifacts. SOmeone told me its the camera trying to compensate for low light. Not sure, cause we did have a lot of light. Can this plug in fix it?

Seems like a lot to spend to fix a few artifacts. Duke
