HM100 & HM700 Use in "24" Highlighted in December 2009's HDVideoPro Magazine

Just got my December 2009 issue of HDVideoPro magazine and there is an article highlighting the use of a HM100U & HM700U in the show "24" in season 8. The article is titled "HD in Real Time"

Check it out.

Care to elaborate at all? I'm not really interested in checking it out without an idea of what it is they have to say or in what capacity they're used in. If it's just to shoot driving plates like they did in the back with other HDV cams then I'm not really interested.

Yes, they are using the cams in secondary usage for doing background projection plates, however, the article goes on to mention how they are using the cams for other stuff as well.

To quote from the source:

..."We use them to gather source material, for things like computer screens, PDA'a, telephone screens, or when we cut in with newsreel footage, traffic-cam footage and so on"...

In short, there using them to capture the live news type stuff for the show, using Fox's news banner and news editing system. They also like them for the tapeless ability and quick turnaround for editing as well as the ease of doing car shots. One thing in particular they like is the small size and portability.

There's a lot more reasons they are using the two cams, the article is positive about the cams on how they fit into a large TV production.

same old same old with 24. Using it for better "News" source material for being viewed on the big projectors in CTE. They also sometimes use them for establishing location shots as I remember the article said. So basically they are using it like they were using the older JVC HDV platform. The show is still mostly 35mm. But its still cool article, just nothing REALLY new unless I missed something my first read through.

More on 24...

JVC has supplied the show with two HM700's equipped with Fujinon 13x3.5 lenses and two HM100's for their use. The majority of the HM series application is ISO and plates. Main camera is 35mm. You'll see much of the HM series footage in their CTU scenes once season 8 starts.

One unique addition this season is that they brought on a Final Cut team. So, in using the HM series they're able to create the material much faster (before they were bringing in the material uncompressed in post).

Another show JVC Professional Video Products is supporting with HM100's is NCIS LA where Final Cut is being used in post. At a given time, up to four cameras are being used on a shoot ISO's and plates. And if you've been watching lately, you've seen the HM100 in front of the camera, too... The main camera on NCIS LA is Genesis.

Both shows tested other cameras before selecting the HM series and asking JVC to support them with equipment usage. JVC does not pay either show for use of the cameras, and they both acquire their own media.

Craig, thanks! Forgot about the FCP aspect and the hm100's.
