Frame rates?
 

Greetings, I'm trying to wrap my head around frame rates. I'm starting a new project, the producer wants to shoot with a Canon 5D and a JVC hm700. I'm thinking that shooting at 720p60 would be the best choice, most flexibility. Also want the ability to then slo mo the footage. But if i understand it correctly, if shooting in 720p60 you want your FCP timeline to be in 720p24 for slo mo? Ahhhhh, confusion.

what is your target destination?

Traditionally world wide delivery & aquisition standard is 24p regardless what people think. 24p can go into NTSC (24p in a 60i format with flags), and small conversion to 25p for PAL & SECAM. NTSC DVD and BluRay is 60i and 24p in a 60i timeline only. HD-DVD was supposed to support 30p and 60p frame rates, but sadly that format died an early death. 24p will gain you lower light capabilities because of the longer shutter speeds, but 60p will gain you smooth slow motion in a 24p timeline. Some people are marketing for HD 60p and 60i, however I would argue that 24p looks good too.

Is this a drama, documentary, comedy, scripted, unscripted?

Mostly I shoot training & corporate shorts, lots of talking heads, some action, but not high speed action.I have been testing the HM700 in 1920 24p and also in 720 60p and 720 24p with the variable frame rate. The over crank, under crank settings are fun to play with. I'm going on a shoot where they will be a canon 5D as the B-Cam. since the new firmware can record in 1920 24p i was thinking of shooting the JVC in 1920 24p and maybe use 720 24p for some slow motion shots. There also may be a Contour HD cam as well. Of course, this all comes in at the last minute. But the final destination will be for web, and DVD applications. My biggest concern is I don't want to have to transcode a bunch of footage when I go to edit.
