Settings for the Sony look
 

For my old JVC DV5000, there was a tutorial on this site for setting the image to look more like a Sony image. Is there one does one of any settings I can use for the HM700 to achieve the same look?

It is difficult to quantify the "Sony" look. Can you be more specific on what camera or camera profile you would like to match or provide a link to the tutorial you referenced? There are some recipes in this forum for specific looks that can be achieved with the HM700.

Lou Bruno, our JVC GY-DV5000 guru, keeps 'em coming. Now he has something new up his sleeve. This time not a dark hidden secret from the depths of the menu, but a way to make the image of the JVC GY-DV5000 look like it was shot on a Sony camera. Many cameramen like this look or are used to it, so here it goes!

GY-DV5000 camera controls
Sony cameras have a certain feel over the images they produce. They tend to have a warm feeling over them, emphasizing the reds in your picture, while still keeping a fresh, almost blue-ish tint over them. This sounds strange when you read it, but once you've seen a Sony-picture, you'll recognize it anywhere.

The JVC has a totally different feel to it. These settings below will help you mimick a Sony look. Try it and enoy it. If you can improve it, feel free to post in our forums.

These are the settings to go with, all to be made in the CAMERA PROCESS and ADVANCED CAMERA PROCESS menus.
• MASTER Black Level +3 - NORMAL
• Detail +1 normal
• Knee 80% 100%
• SKIN Detail ON
• Color Matrix WARM*
• Gamma -1 normal

*You can also use a 1/2 WARM card or a Tiffen WARM filter (812) but you have to white balance then place the filter on the lens. NEVER WB with the filter set to ON.

By crushing your blacks too much with the compress switch it affects the overall picture. The -1 or even -2 GAMMA does the job slightly and increases color saturation. The WARM setting introduces a somewhat SONY red. Also, if you use a better lens such as a 19X Canon or 20X Fujinon, you will see a closer Sony-type look.
