HM700 Mac Finder Issue/Warning

I did a search and I didn't see any relevant threads to this issue, so if this path has already been treaded elsewhere, I apologize.

ANYWAY:

I am using a HM700u with Final Cut Studio 3 on Mac OS 10.6.8, primarily shooting 35 megabit Quicktime-wrapped 720p@24fps. I'm shooting EXCLUSIVELY on Panasonic 16G Class 10 SDHC cards.

I'm not using JVC's, Sony's, or any other log-transfer software. I'm just using a USB2 SDHC card reader and copying the Quicktime files directly to my external hard drive, then importing to FCS for further logging, trimming, etc.

A couple months back, I'd only shot about 10 minutes on a card, and imported it. During the shoot, I'd had a couple mis-punches of the record button on the top handle, resulting in useless files.

I deleted them from within the Mac Finder.

Upon reinserting the SDHC card into the camera, the data on the card was corrupted, and I was unable to use the card in the camera. I tried using the Restore feature three times, but it didn't work. The data I HADN'T deleted from the card via the Mac was still intacted, and the files behaved normally when I put the card back in the card reader on the computer. The card just wouldn't work in the camera.

I made sure I'd backed up all of the data on the computer, reinserted the card in the camera, and reformatted the card. It has run flawlessly since.

So, happy ending. No lost data. Just a small SNAFU that could have cost me a good amount of time and money had it not gone down the way it did.

I wanted to warn you guys about if you didn't know.

I've found no info on this in the camera manual or anywhere else on line. Really, considering the file structure the HM700 uses for recording, it should be common sense, (well, it does in retrospect anyway. Guess it had to bite me in the rear first!)

So, DO NOT delete media files from the card within the Mac's Finder. If you need to free up space on a card, delete the files FROM within the camera.

Good luck!

-Dan
