GY-HM790 with Canon lens. Focus module question.

Does anyone know if the focus module for our lens is different than other Canon lenses?

We're trying to determine the correct Canon model number that will work, as we've seen the Canon FM-12 and even the Canon FM1 module. Also, does anyone know if the Varizoom FCC module fits this lens?

Basically, we're trying to purchase a used one, and not necessarily the one directly from JVC.

Thanks in advance!

Re: GY-HM790 with Canon lens. Focus module question.

Hi Mike,

How old is the lens? Not that it matters -- basically any Canon-compatible broadcast lens focus controller should work, such as the VariZoom unit at VariZoom VZFCC | Canon Focus Control | Lens Control

Re: GY-HM790 with Canon lens. Focus module question.

It's the 14x lens that came with the camera. The reason I'm not sure about the Varizoom is because on their page, under specifications, it's says it's not compatible with most ENG/EFP/HD lenses.

I'm not sure which series the lens falls under, the model on the lens says "KT14x4.4KRSJ".

Re: GY-HM790 with Canon lens. Focus module question.

Mike, I'd recommend calling VariZoom and asking directly. They're pretty knowledgeable about their gear. They should be able to give you a definite yes or no on that.

Meanwhile, this controller *should* work as well -- although you might verify with B&H product support (also very knowledgeable):

Yeah, we've got the JVC version for the HM790 that we own, but we're borrowing a second one for a 2-camera live production in a couple of weeks. Was simply trying to save some money.

Got word back from Varizoom that it should work just fine.

Re: GY-HM790 with Canon lens. Focus module question.

Purchase a used Varizoom FCC on Ebay, it fits the Canon kit lens perfectly.

It actually fits better than the one JVC sells. With the JVC version, we had to remove the stud on the zoom ring, as the focus block was hitting the stud, not allowing us to zoom in all the way. The Varizoom version is 1 or 2mm thinner, allowing it to pass.

Thanks for the report. VariZoom does indeed have their act together, that's a fact.
