Hi 8 and 8mm Video Cassette
 

Hello, I am using an old Sony DV camcorder that uses either 8mm and Hi8 cassettes.


1) How long does these tape lasts?
Many of the tapes are around 6 to 10 years old and I've captured the tape to my hard drive once. I like to know how many times I can capture (transfer) the entire tape to the pc safely and not destroy the quality of both the tape and the videos.



2) I was told to never reuse the tape. Make sense.
But if you do decide to reuse the tape (rerecord video over the old video), is there an estimate of how much life it destroys on the tape?

I don't have a real answer to your questions, but personally I'd
rather use brand new tapes and as you said don't re-use. Rather
be safe than sorry.
