(dv cam) ...

im still pretty new to cameras and stuff, apologise for stupid questions

i noticed that when colour correcting mini dv footage in certain ways, sometimes the compression can become quite apparent

i know dv cam is pretty similar to mini dv apart from the dot pitch or whatever its called, but is the compression noticably diferent?

many thanks,
alex

Track pitch
:)

As far as compression goes, DV and DVCam use the same exact compression. In terms of image quality there is absolutely no difference between the two.

Check out Adam Wilt's DV FAQ for some more info.

It's probably not the compression so much as the arithmetic with which the color correction is done. If you make large gamma corrections and then apply other filters in a system that uses integer arithmetic "posterization" is likely to result. The best programs do all the math in floating point, cost lots more and take longer to render but give better looking results.

There is NO DIFFERENCE. No different algorithms, no different chroma sampling -- it is the same video codec. The tape moves faster through the device, there is a slightly different audio sampling method & the data track allows for addressable bits.

DV, DVCam, DVCPro & Digital 8 all use identical video DV25 encoding.
