"Recording Prohibited" from Mini DV Tapes

Hey there,

I was wondering if anyone has ever encountered a message on their DVD burner that said "Recording Prohibited" from trying to burn footage from a mini dv tape. i've done it before many, many times without this problem.. i use the sony dv direct burner and trying to to do this from someone else's tape. the manual said it may be copyrighted. does this mean i would need to contact the person who shot the footage to have them decrypt it?

thanks

MiniDV does support some type of copy protection, but I don't know how one enables it. However, If you hook your camcorder up to a VCR or DVD Player using the AV-IN function and try to record a commercial tape you will get that same message.

I don't think getting permission will be enough. You'll need a new tape!

Thanks Boyd

Thanks for the info Boyd. I guess I will have to contact the person who recorded the footage.. i'm not sure how she set the copyright protection, and hopefully she will be able to unblock it.

If you capture the footage into a PC, render to mpeg2 and then burn to DVD, you should be OK.

Best regards,
Arnaldo
