transfering hi8 to dvcam or mini dv
can you transfer a hi8 medium to an dvcam or mini dv from a camera to another i was just wondering because i dont have an expensive deck an i need to get some hi8 footage on to my sony pd10 dv cam

I haven't done it cam to cam but have gone from a VX-3 into a DSR-11. all depends if you have the right ins and outs.

I did this using my NLE. I captured the Hi8 footage in Sony Vegas then printed it right back out to tape on a PD 170. I think you can output in deck mode on a Hi8 and record that signal on a DV camcorder but I think you'd end up losing some signal in the process.

Most D8 cameras will also play analog Hi8 tapes (my old Sony TRV330 for example) - that solves the digitizing issue. All you need is a firewire cable, put your D8 on play and any other camera (be it miniDV, DVCam) on recording and you're in business.

On my older Canon ZR10, and I think its the same for my XL2, there is a cable that comes with the camera that is three RCA male ends at one end of the cable, (white, red, the audio, yellow, the video signal) and one 1/8th mini jack at the other end. Most people use the cable to take the video signal out of the camera to a TV or montior. But the port on the camera is a two-way in/out port, and if you hook up the RCA output of a video deck, you can record directly to Mini DV tape. That's how I transfer any VHS that I need to digitize.
