Just played with one last week at Panasonic.

Essentially the HMC40 separated between head and deck, with a few added features.

I think the camera has some tremendous potential and of course the Nano or FlashXDR can take it to greater heights.

Hi Ned,
They haven't released the full specs, but for what they show it have all the functions that the SONY HXR-MC1P lacks. The camera head is almost double size.
I was thinking to order a SONY HXR-MC1P, but..

H.264 AVCHD (read borderline for pro work). Tiny chips.

Looks like the camera mates to the recorder with a special cable and the recorder has the SDI out. Is it a live SDI out or playback only?

Daniel Symmes October 19th, 2009 08:07 PM

Special 20-pin.

Closed system.

Aaron Newsome October 19th, 2009 08:13 PM

That's what I thought. You'd have to buy the camera AND recorder together. I'd still like to know if the HD-SDI out is full raster and live.

Brochure can be found with Google:

As I understand it, you don't need to buy the recorder.
The camera head have DSI, so you can plug it to de NANO.
And with a 20m cable you can set the camera quite far away.

Now is coming.

Google will give different results outside the U.S. I hate that when I travel and get online.

Rafael Amador October 19th, 2009 08:33 PM

Mistake of mine.
The camera needs to be powered and controlled from the recorder.
This put the unit close to the 5K..ufffffff

Bummer. I was looking for another significant use for the Nanoflash. I do a lot of sports videography and wanted to try mounting such a camera on a player.

I don't really get the Panasonic POVCAM. The camera head is about the same size as the small 3 chip AVCHD camcorder they make (HD9???), then you have to add an additional controller/recorder that makes the system even bigger and heavier. It would be too big for any of the fighter aircraft cockpit shots that I've done with the much smaller HXR-MC1. To be honest I'm still amazed at how good the Sony single chip camera is. Just because the Panasonic has 3 chips it doesn't mean it produces a better picture. I would love to see some raw footage from the POVCAM as it always useful to have different options for mini-cam work.

Hi Allister,
Is not only the 3 chips vs 1.
- is Progressive (p25/30/50/60)
- picture stabilizer
- gamma curves
- real white balance
- zebras
- camera control at 20 meters.
IMHO offers much more pro features than the SONY.
