Liquid Image LIC EGO - anyone using and your thoughts?

Hi all,

I just purchased a Liquid Image Ego. I sold a GoPro HD Hero version 1 to get a new GoPro but found this camera and decided to give it a try.

http://www.liquidimageco.com/

I bought it for two reasons:

1) Curiosity - to see how it stacked up against the GoPro, and

2) I didn't really want to spend $400 - $500 to set up a GoPro with WiFi (which the EGO comes with as standard for less than $200.00).

I want WiFi because I use these cameras at dance concerts and it is a pain starting the cameras well before the concert starts just so I can get into place with my main camera. The WiFi option (and the fact that you can use your phone as a monitor for setting up) is a winner for me.

It is 1080p 30fps (no 25 for us Aussies) or 720p 60fps.It has a 12mp sensor (I think the new GoPro is 11). SO it stacks up pretty well feature-wise.

My initial thoughts are that I like the build quality which is solid with a rubbery-coating feel and the fact that you can already download an App to view the picture on for free is amazing. Not too sure I like the instructions' warning that some components may cause cancer or birth defects, though!!

The camera's low light capability seems pretty good - nice clear pics in my office tonight and not too much grain. Audio quality is good, too, without that horrible audio you get with a GoPro case.

But the thing that confuses me - and I am not sure at this stage if this will be the same when the GoPro App comes out, but - once you start the video recording from the App, the WiFi disconnects (it tells you it is going to do so), which essentially means you then can't do anything more with the camera once you have started recording with the app. You have to stop recording with the button on the camera. Which in a way defeats the purpose of using the app for controlling the camera if it is mounted in a hard-to-reach place by design.

Not sure if this is a typical WiFi-controlled camera issue, or it is a limitation of this version of the software (it's called Action Connect and is available for both Android and Apple products).

Anyway, it appears (I haven't tried this yet) that the camera uses the same mount as the GoPro, except an attachment screws into a tripod mount on the bottom which then attaches to the GoPro "clips" or "clamps" for mounting on various GoPro mounts.

So, initially, before I give the camera a good run, it appears it is a solid contender to the GoPro.

Anyone else using them - if so, what do you think?

David

As an addition to my post, I found out this morning from the manufacturers that they are indeed upgrading their software soon to enable stop/start video and monitoring whilst shooting.

That will be handy.
